Find out how to keep your washer and dryer fresh.

Your washer and dryer keep your clothes looking and feeling fresh, but who’s keeping your washer and dryer fresh? The truth is, we can do a little more to get the most out of these everyday appliances. Here are eight tips to extend the life of your washer and dryer and reduce the amount of energy used in your home.

Washer watchouts

Go light on the detergent.

More does not mean cleaner. In fact, too many suds carry additional odors and bacteria. Using too much detergent can also leave layers of residue inside your washer – talk about counterproductive!

Use cold water.

Washing your clothes on cold can save a lot on energy bills. Since this method isn’t as effective at removing grime as warm or hot water, you can run every fourth load of clothes through a warm cycle (labels permitting) to protect the overall health of your washer.

Air it out.

When you finish each wash, leave the washer door open to let moisture evaporate and prevent mildew growth.

Inspect it annually.

Take the time to check your washer’s hoses, valves, and drainage systems at least once a year. If you notice any cracks or leaks, unplug your washer immediately and call a licensed technician.

Dryer do’s and don’ts

DO Sort loads.

Before drying clothes, separate them into two different loads: slow-drying (jeans, sweatshirts) and fast-drying (khakis, button-ups). This helps you use dryer settings more efficiently and prevents fast-drying items from premature wear and tear.

DO Deep clean the lint screen.

DO Clear our dryer ducts.

Lint can become dangerous if it builds up in the dryer ducts because it is highly flammable. Clean it out every three-four months to prevent house fires and help your dryer run more efficiently.

DON’T Use dryer sheets.

Dryer sheets can leave a waxy coating on the lint screen and prevent air from circulating correctly. To help with static, opt for dryer balls or use half or quarter-sheets for each load.
