Learn preventative tips to keep your air conditioner running smoothly.

Maintaining modern air conditioning equipment is a breeze compared to the system upkeep of generations past. However, air conditioners still have many components, so it pays to know what maintenance measures will keep things running, and how to tell if a part of your unit needs replacing:

  • Notice little clues. Are your energy bills suddenly higher? Do you set the thermostat for 75 degrees and find the unit keeps running and running? These are signs that your AC isn’t operating as efficiently as it should.
  • Protect against power surges. Low voltage events, like brown-outs, are a common source of damage to air conditioners. A switching device designed to protect the AC from damage can help – if the voltage drops too far, the system will automatically turn off. An HVAC technician can install this for you.
  • When in doubt, check it out. Pinpointing problems can be difficult. If it’s making any unusual noise, not working like it used to, or just generally seems off, it’s a good time to ask a professional.
  • Know when replacing is smarter than fixing. Good technicians can often get an AC running again, but sometimes replacement is more economical. Consider replacing your AC unit if it's older than seven years old and requires frequent expensive repairs.

Maximize the lifespan and efficiency of your air-conditioning system and minimize the risk of sudden, unexpected repair expenses with a cooling protection plan
